If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, belong to a family who has a medical history of having problems with their uric acid level, have medical problems with body enzymes and under medication that affects uric acid level, then you are one of those who have a higher risk of having gout. Gout is caused primarily by excessive uric acid. The food and drinks we take in are main sources of uric acid as they contain purine. There are lots of foods that cause gout.

You should be careful with your diet. The foods that cause gout are usually foods that are high in fats and cholesterol. These foods are high in purine which when processed by the body produce uric acid. When there is excessive uric acid in the body, joints become inflamed thus causing gout.


There are drinks and foods that cause gout that contains a very high level of purine. These drinks and foods should be avoided. To name a few of these foods and drinks high in purine are beer because of its yeast content, alcoholic beverages, animal innards like kidney, heart and liver, mussels and sardines.

Among the foods that cause gout there are also some foods that you could eat in moderation. Foods like shrimps, lobsters, scallops; fowls like turkey, goose, pheasant, and bacon are few of the foods that you can eat in moderation despite their purine content. You could also eat beef, pork, cold cuts, chicken and tuna in moderation. Among the vegetables that you can eat in moderation are beans, spinach, cauliflower, peas and asparagus as these vegetables also contain purine.

There are foods that cause gout that we should avoid or eat in moderation. There are also foods and drinks that we can enjoy because they are good for our body even though they have little purine content. These drinks and foods include water, whole grain bread, fruits like cherries and berries, vegetables like celery and dairy products low in fats like cheese and low fat milk.
